Au Pair Experience in the USA: What No One Tells You Before You Go

·

Becoming an au pair in the United States sounds exciting — and it truly can be.

A new country.
A different culture.
A chance to improve your English.
Weekend trips.
Meeting people from all over the world.

For many people, becoming an au pair is the first real step toward building a life outside of Brazil.

And yes — it can be beautiful.

But there are things nobody really talks about before you leave.

The emotional side.
The uncertainty.
The unexpected growth.

If you’re thinking about becoming an au pair in the USA, here’s what I wish someone had told me before I went.

1. It feels exciting… and scary at the same time

You spend months preparing.

Documents.
Agency interviews.
Talking to host families.
Planning your move.

And then suddenly…

It becomes real.

You arrive in America and realize you’re starting from zero.

A new home.
New people.
New language.
New routines.

It’s exciting — but also overwhelming.

And both feelings can exist together.

2. Culture shock is real

Even small things feel different:

  • family routines
  • food
  • communication style
  • schedules
  • parenting

At first, you may feel like you’re doing everything wrong.

That feeling usually passes.

But adjusting takes time.

3. Homesickness can surprise you

Even if you were ready.

Even if moving abroad was your dream.

Sometimes you miss simple things:

  • your language
  • Brazilian food
  • family
  • familiar places

And that’s part of the process.

4. You become stronger than you imagined

This is where everything shifts.

You learn:

  • independence
  • confidence
  • emotional resilience
  • how to solve problems alone
  • how to trust yourself

And one day you notice:

You’ve changed.

5. Traveling becomes part of your lifestyle

One of the most special parts of au pair life in the USA:

Freedom to explore.

Weekend road trips.
Different states.
National parks.
Big cities.
New experiences.

Living in the U.S. gives travel a completely different feeling.

You stop visiting.

You start living it.

Final Thoughts

No one can fully prepare you.

But being an au pair is more than childcare.

It can become the beginning of a completely new version of your life.

And sometimes the bravest decisions become the most beautiful chapters.
